An office rug is a rug laid in a workspace rather than a home — a private office, a meeting room, a reception floor or a study. The rugs on this page are handwoven, loom-woven and machine-woven in wool, Tencel, viscose and cotton, in sizes from 80 × 150 cm (2'7" × 4'11") to 300 × 400 cm (9'10" × 13'1"), with runners to 90 × 500 cm.

An office floor takes a specific kind of wear: a chair on castors moving through the same 1.5 meter arc a hundred times a day, feet arriving from outside, and a room that has to look composed on a video call at eleven in the morning. This page covers what suits that, how to size a rug around a desk and a meeting table, and where the collection's 537 rugs actually differ.

What an office floor asks of a rug

A low, dense surface and a color that stays quiet. Everything else is preference.

Pile height is the one measurement that decides whether a rug works in an office, because a desk chair is the problem. Castors roll cleanly across a flat weave or a short, densely packed pile; on a deep or shaggy pile they sink, drag the rug into a ridge, and eventually tear at the point where the wheel turns. That rules out most of what looks comfortable in a bedroom and rules in loom-woven wool, flat-woven kilim and the tighter machine-woven constructions.

The second constraint is color under artificial light. Offices are lit from above by fluorescent or LED panels with a cool cast, which flattens warm reds and lifts grays and blues. A rug that reads as terracotta in a showroom can read as brown under a panel light. The safest ground for a working room is a mid-tone — gray, mink, beige, navy — with the pattern doing the work rather than the color.

      What is in the collection

Five hundred and thirty-seven rugs, drawn from most of the house's series. Four groups matter for an office.

      • Tempus Series — loom-woven wool, Halıcızade's own, in Oushak, medallion and worn-vintage drawing. Gray-mink, beige, blue-gray, black. The widest size range on the page, up to 300 × 400 cm, and the closest thing here to a conventional executive-office rug.
      • Zade Series — loom-woven Tencel, viscose and bamboo, wool-free, in Oushak, Pazyryk and tree-of-life drawing at high color saturation: red, green, terra, blue. For a reception or a room that wants to be looked at.
      • Nostalji and Taftan Series — loom-woven Tencel and viscose in Afghan-Turkmen, Yağcıbedir and vintage patterns, with a sheen that survives overhead lighting well.
      • Handwoven wool — Mihman, Anadolu Şal and Anatolian village pieces, one-offs in irregular sizes such as 174 × 234 or 205 × 302 cm. These are for a room where the rug is the point.

Compare wool rugs against Tencel rugs if the choice comes down to fiber rather than pattern.

Sizing a desk, a meeting table and a corridor

Measure the furniture's working envelope, not the furniture. A desk occupies 160 cm; a desk with a chair being pushed back from it occupies 260 cm.

      WhereSizeWhy
Under a desk and chair200 × 300 cm (6'7" × 9'10")The chair stays on the rug through its full range; the front legs of a visitor chair land on it too
A private office, rug centered250 × 350 cm (8'2" × 11'6")Desk, chair and one seating position sit within the rug, with floor showing at the walls
Under a meeting table300 × 400 cm (9'10" × 13'1")Every chair stays on the rug when pulled out — the single most common sizing error
Reception or breakout160 × 230 or 170 × 240 cmAnchors a sofa and two chairs without running under circulation
Corridor between rooms80 × 300 to 90 × 500 cmRuns the length with floor showing at both sides

The meeting-room row is the one worth reading twice. A chair pulled back from a table travels about 60 cm; if the rug stops short of that, every chair in the room catches its back legs on the edge each time someone sits down. Add 60–70 cm to the table's footprint on all four sides and buy the next size up. For corridor work, see hallway runners.

      Wear, and where it lands

Not evenly. In an office, three areas take nearly all of it: the arc under the chair, the meter inside the door, and the line between the door and the desk. Everything else stays close to new for years.

Two things follow. First, put a hard chair mat under the castors if the chair is used all day — it is the cheapest possible insurance, and it moves the wear off the rug entirely. Second, rotate the rug 180 degrees once a year so that the worn arc and the clean field trade places. A dense loom-woven wool pile hides this better than a smooth viscose one, because wool recovers after compression while viscose lies down and stays down where a wheel has crossed it.

Grit is the real enemy, not staining. Sand and street grit carried in on shoes work down to the base of the pile and cut the fibers from underneath every time someone walks over them. A mat at the door and a weekly vacuum without the beater bar does more for an office rug than anything else you can buy.

      Care

Almost everything in this collection is tagged for professional washing, which is done flat rather than in a drum. That is the whole instruction. A wool or Tencel rug should not go into a washing machine — wool felts when agitated in hot water, and viscose loses most of its strength while wet.

Between washes: vacuum in the direction of the pile without the beater bar, blot spills rather than rubbing them, and keep the rug out of a strip of direct sun from a south window, which fades a dyed pile faster than feet wear it. Plan on a professional wash every twelve to eighteen months for a rug under daily office use.

      Frequently asked questions

What pile height suits an office with desk chairs?

Low and dense, or flat-woven. A castor rolls cleanly across a short, tightly packed pile and sinks into a deep or shaggy one, dragging the rug into a ridge and wearing it at the point where the wheel turns.

What size rug goes under a meeting table?

Add 60 to 70 centimeters to the table's footprint on all four sides, which for most boardroom tables means 300 × 400 cm. A chair pulled back travels about 60 cm, and a rug that stops short of that catches every chair's back legs.

What size rug goes under a desk?

200 × 300 cm covers a desk, the chair through its full range of movement, and the front legs of a visitor chair. For a private office where the rug should also read as a room element, 250 × 350 cm is the next step.

Which colors work best in a working office?

Mid-tones — gray, mink, beige, navy — because overhead LED and fluorescent light has a cool cast that flattens warm reds and lifts cool colors. Let the pattern rather than the color carry the interest.

Can an office rug be washed in a machine?

No. Nearly every rug in this collection is tagged for professional washing, which is done flat and dried under tension. Wool felts when agitated in hot water and viscose loses most of its strength while wet.

How often should an office rug be cleaned?

Vacuum weekly without the beater bar and have the rug professionally washed every twelve to eighteen months under daily use. Grit carried in on shoes cuts the pile from below and is the main cause of wear.

Handwoven or loom-woven for an office?

Loom-woven for a room with chairs on castors, because the weave is even and the sizes are standard enough to match a corridor runner. Handwoven for a reception or a director's room, where the rug is a one-off piece and the floor is walked rather than rolled across.
