A 9 square meter rug is a large-room size, woven at a nominal 250 x 350 cm (8'2" x 11'6"). Real pieces in the band run from 240 x 340 cm to 278 x 372 cm, or 8.2 to 10.3 m². It is the size that carries a full seating group or an eight-seat dining table.

Size bands are a shopping convenience, not a standard. What follows is the actual range of measurements that land here, the room dimensions each one wants, and where the band stops being enough.

What sizes actually land in the 9 m² band?

Eight of them, and only one is a round number.

        • 240 x 340 cm (7'10" x 11'2") — 8.2 m²
        • 246 x 350 cm (8'1" x 11'6") — 8.6 m²
        • 250 x 350 cm (8'2" x 11'6") — 8.8 m², the nominal size
        • 253 x 350 cm (8'4" x 11'6") — 8.9 m²
        • 260 x 370 cm (8'6" x 12'2") — 9.6 m²
        • 272 x 367 cm (8'11" x 12'0") — 10.0 m²
        • 276 x 360 cm (9'1" x 11'10") — 9.9 m²
        • 278 x 372 cm (9'1" x 12'2") — 10.3 m²

A 298 cm round (9'9" across) is filed here too, though a circle covers only about 79 percent of the square that contains it, which puts its real area nearer 7 m².

Machine-woven and loom-woven rugs arrive in the standard 240 x 340 and 250 x 350; the odd numbers are hand-knotted, where the warp tension and the weaver's beat decide the final width. Each rug's measured size is printed on its own page, and it is the number to plan from.

How much room does 9 m² need?

        About 3.9 x 4.9 m of clear floor.

The arithmetic is simple: a 250 x 350 cm rug with 70 cm of bare floor showing at every wall wants a room 390 x 490 cm. Narrow the border to 40 cm and a 330 x 430 cm room will take it, though the rug will begin to read as fitted. Wall-to-wall carpet is cut to the room; a rug is laid on the floor, and the strip of bare boards around the edge is what tells the eye which of the two it is looking at.

        Where the furniture goes

Three arrangements account for almost every 9 m² rug sold.

        • A seating group, front legs on. A 250 x 350 cm rug runs under a three-seat sofa of 200 to 230 cm, carries the coffee table entirely, and reaches the front feet of two armchairs opposite. This is the arrangement the size was made for.
        • A dining table with the chairs staying on. Chairs need 60 to 75 cm of pull-back room behind every edge of the table, and that clearance must be rug rather than floor. At 75 cm, a 250 x 350 cm rug takes a table up to 100 x 200 cm; at 60 cm it takes one up to 130 x 230 cm. A table for eight fits; a table for ten runs out of rug.
        • A bed, narrowly. A 180 x 200 cm bed centered on 250 x 350 cm leaves 35 cm of pile at each side and about 150 cm at the foot. It reads well from the door and is thin underfoot when you get out of bed. If you want a proper 55 to 60 cm to step onto, this is the point to go up a band.

Under a meeting table the same clearance rule applies, and the rug does something else as well: it takes the hard edge off footfall in a room with a long table and little soft furnishing.

9 m² against the bands on either side

BandNominal sizeFeet and inchesAreaWhat it carries
        8 m²240 x 340 cm7'10" x 11'2"8.2 m² / 88 sq ftThree-seat sofa and coffee table, front legs on
        9 m²250 x 350 cm8'2" x 11'6"8.8 m² / 94 sq ftFull seating group, or a table for eight with chairs on
        10 m²260 x 370 cm8'6" x 12'2"9.6 m² / 104 sq ftL-shaped sectional with all legs on
        12 m²300 x 400 cm9'10" x 13'1"12.0 m² / 129 sq ftKing bed with 60 cm each side, or a table for ten

The bands overlap: a 260 x 370 cm rug is tagged into both the 9 and the 10, because 9.6 m² is honestly neither. Browse the neighbors at 8 m² rugs, 10 m² rugs and 12 m² rugs, and see the rug size guide for the full table of sizes in centimeters and feet.

What is woven at this size

All four constructions, and they behave differently on a floor this wide.

Hand-knotted wool rugs at 9 m² are single pieces — one loom, one size, months of work — which is why each one has its own measurement. Loom-woven rugs come in the standard sizes at a step below hand-knotted in price. Machine-woven rugs in viscose reach this size easily and are light enough for one person to lift and turn. Flat-woven kilims exist in the band but are rare, because a weft-faced weave 250 cm wide needs an unusually wide loom.

Compare hand-knotted rugs against machine-woven rugs before you decide, since at this size the difference in weight alone changes how often the rug gets moved.

Living with a rug this size

Rotate it twice a year. A rug under a fixed seating group wears in two or three places and nowhere else, and turning it 180 degrees puts the traffic lane on fresh pile. Vacuum with the beater bar off and in the direction of the pile. Lift the furniture rather than vacuuming around it, since the grit that cuts wool collects exactly where nobody looks. Have a hand-knotted wool rug washed professionally every twelve to eighteen months when it is in daily use, and read how a rug is washed first.

        Frequently asked questions

What size is a 9 square meter rug in centimeters?

The nominal size is 250 x 350 cm, which is 8.75 m². Woven pieces in the band run from about 240 x 340 cm up to 278 x 372 cm, so the real area falls between roughly 8.2 and 10.3 m². Every rug carries its measured size on its own page.

How many square feet is a 9 m² rug?

About 94 square feet at the nominal 250 x 350 cm, and between 88 and 111 square feet across the whole band. In American terms the size sits between an 8 x 10 foot rug and a 9 x 12.

How big a room does a 9 m² rug need?

About 3.9 x 4.9 m, if 70 cm of bare floor is to show at every wall. Less floor showing is a choice rather than a mistake, but under 30 cm the border disappears and the rug starts to read as flooring.

Will a 9 m² rug fit under a dining table?

Yes, for a table up to about 130 x 230 cm. Chairs need 60 to 75 cm of pull-back room behind each edge of the table, and that clearance has to sit on the rug or the back legs drop off it.

Is 9 m² big enough for a king bed?

It works, narrowly. A 180 x 200 cm bed centered on a 250 x 350 cm rug leaves 35 cm of pile at each side. For 55 to 60 cm of rug to walk onto, move up to 300 x 400 cm.

Why are hand-knotted rugs in this size never exactly 250 x 350?

Because the warp is under tension on a vertical loom and the weaver beats each row down by hand. Sizes such as 246 x 350 cm or 276 x 360 cm come off the loom that way and are not trimmed to a catalog number.

Does a rug this large need a pad?

A pad is worth having at any size and more so at this one. It keeps the rug from creeping under a sofa, adds a little cushion where furniture presses, and lets air move through the pile when you vacuum.
