Sitting Room & Formal Salon Rugs

It doesn't matter what kind of living room you have. What matters is the kind of living room you want to live in, host your guests, and have long phone conversations. The difference between your living room's current state and the way you want it to be is the 'rug'.

A living room rug is sized from the seating group rather than from the room: it should be wide enough for the front legs of every sofa and chair to stand on it, which for a standard three-and-two arrangement means 200 × 290 cm (6'7" × 9'6") or larger. This collection holds 592 rugs in that range, hand-knotted, loom-woven and machine-woven.

Most living room rugs fail for one reason: they are a size too small. The rug floats in the middle of the floor with the furniture stranded around it, and the room reads as two separate things. The method for measuring a room — masking tape on the floor, furniture pushed back, look at it for a day — is set out in the living room rug guide. What follows here is how to apply it to the rugs that are actually in stock.

The three placements, and what each one costs in centimeters

There are only three ways to lay a rug under a seating group, and each one implies a different size.

          • All legs on. Every piece of furniture stands entirely on the rug, with about 20 cm (8 in) of pile still showing beyond the back feet. This is the most settled of the three and the most expensive, because it needs 240 × 340 cm (7'10" × 11'2") at minimum and more often 300 × 400 cm (9'10" × 13'1").
          • Front legs on. The front feet of the sofa and the armchairs land on the rug; the back feet stay on the floor. The rug should run the full width of the sofa plus roughly 20 cm (8 in) at either end. In a three-and-two arrangement that is 200 × 290 cm (6'7" × 9'6") or 200 × 300 cm (6'7" × 9'10"); in a smaller room, 160 × 230 cm (5'3" × 7'7").
          • Table only. The rug carries the coffee table and nothing else. It works in a small flat and nowhere else, and it is the placement that most often looks like a mistake. If you use it, leave 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16 in) of rug visible on every side of the table.

One rule holds across all three. Leave a margin of bare floor between the rug and the walls — a hand's width is enough — because a rug run to the skirting stops being a rug and becomes fitted carpet.

          What size for what room?

Measure the seating group first, then the room, then buy from the larger of the two answers.

The two sizes that account for most living rooms have their own pages: 6 m² rugs for a standard salon and 8 m² rugs for a large one.

          Hand-knotted, loom-woven or machine-woven for a living room?

A living room takes more traffic than a bedroom and less than a hall, which puts all three constructions genuinely in play.

Hand-knotted rugs are tied knot by knot on a vertical loom; the wool is dense, the drawing is finer, and the rug is heavy enough to lie flat without a pad. They also carry abrash — bands of slightly different color where the weaver moved from one dye lot to the next — which is evidence of hand work and not a fault. Loom-woven rugs give an even surface and consistent sizing at a lower price, with the finishing done by hand. Machine-woven rugs reproduce the same patterns on a power loom, weigh less, and can be lifted and shaken out by one person.

Fiber matters as much as construction. Highland wool is springy and slightly oily to the touch, recovers after a sofa has stood on it, and holds a matte color; viscose and Tencel reflect light and change value as you cross the room. Compare wool rugs before deciding.

Color in a room that gets used

Start from the floor and the walls, not from the sofa.

On a pale oak or light stone floor, a mid-tone or dark rug draws the outline of the seating group and gives the room depth. On a dark floor the opposite holds, and a cream or soft madder ground lifts the whole room. Where the walls already carry a strong color, a rug that repeats one of the tones in the room — usually the third or fourth color, not the dominant one — will settle the scheme faster than a contrast will.

Pattern is the practical variable. A patterned field hides the marks that a living room accumulates: crumbs, a dropped olive, the track worn between the door and the sofa. The classical Oushak palette of apricot, madder and soft blue is the most forgiving entry point in this collection, and it is the one that suits both modern and traditional furniture.

          Kilims, rounds and layering

A flat-woven kilim can carry a living room, provided you accept what it is: thin, reversible, light and cool underfoot, with the pattern made by the weft rather than by pile. It suits warm months, layering over boards, and rooms where the furniture is heavy enough to hold it in place.

A round rug rarely works as the main rug under a rectangular seating group, because the corners of the arrangement fall off the circle. It works well as a second rug — under a reading chair, beneath a round table, in the open floor beside a bookcase — where it balances the rectangle already on the floor.

Living with a living room rug

Vacuum without the beater bar and in the direction of the pile. Rotate the rug twice a year so that daylight and the path from the door land on different parts of it, and keep it out of a full south window, which fades madder faster than feet wear it. Blot spills rather than rubbing them, and have a hand-knotted wool rug professionally washed every twelve to eighteen months if the room is in daily use.

          Frequently asked questions

What size rug do I need for a living room?

Size the rug from the seating group. A standard three-and-two arrangement needs 200 × 290 cm or 200 × 300 cm so the front legs of every piece stand on the pile. An L-shaped corner unit or a room over 25 square meters needs 240 × 340 cm or larger.

Should all the furniture sit on the living room rug?

Not necessarily. All legs on is the most settled arrangement and needs at least 240 × 340 cm. Front legs on is the usual compromise and works from 200 × 290 cm upward. A rug that carries only the coffee table looks undersized in most rooms.

How much floor should show around a living room rug?

Leave a margin of bare floor between the rug and the walls, roughly a hand's width or more on each side. A rug taken right up to the skirting board reads as wall-to-wall flooring rather than as a rug, and it removes the outline that defines the seating area.

Which rug is best for a living room with children or pets?

A patterned wool or machine-woven pile in a mid tone. Wool recovers after pressure and hides tracked-in marks, patterned fields break up stains that a solid color would show, and a machine-woven rug is light enough to lift and shake out on its own.

Can a round rug work in a living room?

As a second rug, yes. Under a rectangular sofa-and-chairs arrangement a circle leaves the corners of the group off the pile, so a round rug is better used beneath a reading chair, a round table, or in the open floor beside a bookcase.

What is the most forgiving pattern for a living room rug?

An open Oushak field in apricot, madder and soft blue. The drawing is wide-set rather than dense, the palette works with both modern and traditional furniture, and the mid-tone ground conceals the ordinary marks a room in daily use collects.
