Gray Abstract Loom-Woven Tencel and Wool Rug, Günyolu Series

A terracotta disc climbs out of the left-hand corner across a gray ground, the way the sun comes up over a ridge. Gray Abstract Loom-Woven Tencel and Wool Rug, Günyolu Series — Tencel® and wool worked over a cotton foundation, with orange bleeding out of the terracotta into the gray around it. Abstraction on a rug usually means shapes with nothing behind them. This one has a subject, and the subject is a time of day. The disc is placed off-center so the field has somewhere to go, and the gray runs cool everywhere the terracotta does not reach.

01When you walk in

It belongs beside pale linen seating, unfinished wood or a concrete floor — the Scandinavian and nature-drawn interiors it was drawn for — and it does two different jobs depending on the room: a gathering point in a sitting room, and something considerably quieter in a bedroom.

02How it feels underfoot

In a space where morning light lands regularly, the Tencel® in it turns the whole surface over as the sun moves. The series is named for a mountain village in Kemaliye, Erzincan. Its construction is the house's middle route — a mechanical ground under hand-directed pattern, worked in Anatolia with a great deal of women's labor behind it, and close enough to knotting that people who look at rugs for a living have to check. Wool gives the terracotta its body, Tencel® gives the gray its movement.

03From the hand of the weaver

Send it to a professional when it needs washing. Loom-woven in Anatolia, hand work and machine knotting in the same piece. Cotton foundation, with Tencel® and wool making the face. A terracotta and orange disc rising from one corner of a gray field. Wool holds the terracotta; Tencel® moves the gray as the light changes. Drawn for Scandinavian and nature-led rooms, pale linen and raw wood. Each piece carries its own weave number. Carries the tree-of-life mark that goes on a Halıcızade commission. Washing is a workshop job. Ten years from now the gray will have softened and the terracotta will not, and the rug will look more like a sunrise than it does today.
