Gray Abstract Machine-Woven Viscose Rug, Mermer Series

Marble is what the word mermer means, and the series took it for the look rather than for anything in the fiber: a gray machine-woven rug whose pile is mostly viscose with acrylic behind it, abstract in its drawing, made in Türkiye and measuring 200 × 290 cm, which is 6'7" × 9'6".

01Color that shifts through the day

What it borrows from stone is the way light moves across a polished surface. An abstract field has to hold a room without a center to hold it, and the way this one does it is tonal — gray against gray, with the contrast coming from how the pile lies rather than from a change of dye. Walk around it and the lighter and darker areas trade places. Under a warm bulb the whole field drifts toward silver-beige; in daylight coming from the north it cools until it is nearly blue.

02Coming off the loom

That movement is the design, and a photograph can only show one instant of it. Machine-woven in Türkiye at 100 reed. The reed is the comb that spaces the warp threads on the loom, and its count is the trade's shorthand for how finely the face is set, so a higher figure means more threads across the same width.

03What Wool does

Viscose carries the surface and acrylic sits behind it for resilience. Viscose is a cellulose fiber and takes light almost the way silk does, which is where the stone effect comes from — and it is also why the pile keeps a mark where someone has stood until it is brushed back. Anyone who finds that irritating should be looking at wool instead. Have it washed professionally. Machine-woven in Türkiye, at 100 reed. Viscose-led pile with acrylic behind it for resilience. An abstract gray field whose contrast comes from the lie of the pile. 200 × 290 cm (6'7" × 9'6"), a salon size. It holds pressure marks until the pile is brushed the other way.
