Cream Floral Hand-Knotted Wool and Silk Rug, Sultan Series

Matt wool underneath, bright silk in the drawing: a hand-knotted rug from the Sultan series, 179 × 259 cm (5'10" × 8'6"), woven in Türkiye with floral motifs taken from Oushak in beige, gold and a green sitting close to olive. The flowers are the classical Anatolian ones and they are spread over the whole field rather than gathered into a medallion, which is what keeps a traditional pattern usable under modern furniture.

01After the color

Beige is the ground and gold does most of the drawing, while the green appears in the leaves and along the border, where it stops the warm tones running together. Because the wool is matt and the silk is not, the motifs stand out by brightness even where their colors are close. Wool and silk, knotted by hand in Türkiye at a high knot count — the fineness of the flower drawing follows directly from how many knots occupy a square decimeter, and this rug has enough of them to describe a petal.

02From the hand of the weaver

The yarns are the good ones, and the number of Turkish workshops still knotting at this density has fallen sharply. It will hold up under furniture for decades and be ruined by a single home shampoo, so professional washing only. Hand-knotted in Türkiye at a high knot count.
