The story of this rug

Beige Oushak Floral Handwoven Rug, Sultan Series — 178 × 265 cm (5'10" × 8'8"), woven in Türkiye in wool with silk in the motifs, a beige field carrying gold-yellow and green flowers drawn from Anatolian Oushak sources.

01What it sits well with

Under carved furniture it looks inherited; under thin metal legs it looks deliberate. One of one. Beige is the flattest ground a weaver can be handed and the hardest to make interesting, and the answer here is to keep the value range narrow and the color range wide: gold, a soft green and cream, all within half a tone of the field. From across a room the effect is one warm surface.

02At the loom in in Türkiye

Standing on it, the drawing separates into individual flower heads with leaves turning off them, which is how the Oushak sources drew it in the first place. Türkiye, by hand, at a knot count that is the real difference between this series and the rugs it resembles.

03What the yarn is

Wool takes the field and silk takes the motifs, and the silk is not decoration — it is what makes a beige-on-beige pattern visible at all, since it reflects where the wool absorbs. Nothing shouts at the edges, so the rug ends rather than stops.

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
