The Oushak flower has been drawn the same way in western Anatolia for centuries, and here it runs across seven square meters of cream. Color sits between gold and rust — earth tones with warmth in them, laid over a light cream ground so the field never darkens.

01Up close to the pattern

The motifs are dense without being crowded: they follow the classical Oushak order and still leave gaps, and the gaps are what let the eye rest on a rug this large. Bamboo viscose runs through the flower forms and gives them a silky lift, so the pattern brightens and dims across the day while the cream behind it never moves. Cotton and wool build a foundation that is firm underfoot and soft to sit on.

02Knot by knot, by hand

The knot count runs to tens of thousands and the work runs to months, which on a piece this size is a plain statement of how long it takes rather than a compliment to anybody. Seven square meters is a commitment of floor: it wants a large salon, or a bedroom big enough to take a bed standing on it, and it is heavy enough that moving it is a job for two people.

It takes a professional wash well and a domestic one badly. Hand-knotted in India: wool and cotton, with bamboo viscose in the flowers. Classical Oushak flowers in gold and rust on a light cream ground. Bamboo viscose gives the motifs a silky lift the cream ground does not have.
