Bamboo viscose is what makes this one look the way it does: a cellulose fiber spun to take light like silk, worked into the flower drawing so the motifs edge themselves in shine against a pure white ground.

01At the loom in in India

A Sultanahmet-series rug, tied by hand in India over cotton, 253 × 356 cm (8'4" × 11'8"). One piece. The flowers are drawn finely and the white behind them is left almost entirely open, so the whole rug depends on how the light falls: where it strikes directly the motifs brighten to near-white themselves and the outlines disappear, and where it falls away the cream and beige shading inside each flower comes out. That is as bright as a classical rug gets.

02What the yarn is

Across nine square meters it does one thing very well — it makes a large room feel larger, because there is nothing dark on the floor to hold the eye down. Cotton makes the foundation and bamboo viscose makes the surface; the knots run into the tens of thousands and were tied one at a time over months of work.

03Color that shifts through the day

Two things follow from a white ground of this size. The first is that daily care is easy — the surface wipes and vacuums without trouble. The second is that this is the wrong rug for a hallway or a room people walk into in shoes, and we would rather say so now than let a buyer find out later.

05What Silk does
