Cream Oushak-Pattern Hand-Knotted Bamboo Viscose Rug, Sultanahmet Series

Classical Uşak motifs in beige and earth tones, drawn rhythmically enough that the eye keeps moving across the field instead of stopping in the middle of it — that is the pattern, and the Sultanahmet-series rug carrying it was knotted by hand in India from cotton and bamboo viscose at 250 × 356 cm (8'2" × 11'8").

01After the color

A single piece. Cream and earth is the least demanding pairing in Anatolian weaving, and this piece uses it without raising its voice: the ground is quiet, the motifs are a half-step darker than the ground, and the rug reads as a surface rather than as an object standing on the floor.

02What Viscose does

Bamboo viscose gives every motif a faint gloss, so the pattern is visible from an angle where a fully matt rug would flatten out. Under morning light the whole field warms; in the evening it drops back toward stone. Cotton runs through the foundation and gives three and a half meters of rug the stiffness to lie flat; bamboo viscose makes the pile.

03Knot by knot, by hand

Months of careful work went into it, in knots numbering in the tens of thousands. At this length it belongs under a very large dining table or around a big seating group, where it softens the meeting of floor and furniture instead of dividing them. Walnut and solid timber are its natural neighbors.

04The tone of the ground

Wipe and sweep for daily care; a proper wash needs a professional. Knotted by hand in India: months of work, and knots in the tens of thousands. Bamboo viscose pile over a cotton foundation. Cream ground with classical Uşak motifs in beige and earth tones.
