A 10 square meter rug measures 250 × 400 cm (8'2" × 13'1"), covering exactly 10.00 m². It is a room-sized piece for floors over about 32 m²: an open-plan living space, a dining room seating ten, or a bedroom where a king bed floats clear of the walls.
This is the largest size most houses ever buy, and the one where the decisions are as much about logistics as about proportion. What follows is the dimensions in the band, the arrangements the size makes possible, and the two measurements to take before ordering — one of which has nothing to do with the room.
250 × 400 cm is the standard. Hand-knotted pieces at this end of the range are wider and shorter, because the width of a loom is a physical limit and the length is not.
| Size (cm) | Feet and inches | Actual area | Proportion |
|---|---|---|---|
| 260 × 370 | 8'6" × 12'2" | 9.62 m² | 1 : 1.42 |
| 250 × 400 | 8'2" × 13'1" | 10.00 m² | 1 : 1.60 — the standard |
| 277 × 366 | 9'1" × 12'0" | 10.14 m² | 1 : 1.32 |
| 275 × 372 | 9'0" × 12'2" | 10.23 m² | 1 : 1.35 |
| 278 × 372 | 9'1" × 12'2" | 10.34 m² | 1 : 1.34 |
The difference between 250 and 278 cm of width is the difference between a rug that a seating group stands on and a rug that a seating group stands on with room to walk around the outside of it. Above this band the next step is 12 square meters at 300 × 400 cm; the rug size guide carries the whole ladder.
Floors over about 32 m², and a particular kind of them.
Everything else on this page is proportion. This one is arithmetic about a staircase.
A 250 × 400 cm hand-knotted wool rug is rolled for transport around its short side, which makes a cylinder about 250 cm long. That cylinder is rigid. It does not fold; it does not bend around a half-landing; and it will not go up a stairwell whose turn is shorter than the roll itself. Before ordering at this size, measure four things: the width of the front door, the diagonal of any turn on the stairs, the internal depth of the lift, and the clear height under the ceiling if the roll has to be stood on end. A rug that reaches the building and stops at the second landing is the one failure at this size that no amount of measuring the room prevents.
Then measure the room, and leave more border than you would lower down the range. The 30 cm minimum still holds, but at this scale a rug that runs close to the skirting reads as fitted carpet rather than as a rug laid on a floor, and the whole point of the piece is lost. Aim for 40 to 45 cm of bare floor on every side. That puts the smallest sensible room at roughly 3.4 × 4.9 m for a 250 × 400 cm piece.
One more, once it is down. A rug this size cannot be turned by one person and cannot be shaken out at all. Rotating it twice a year — which is what keeps sun and traffic from wearing one end — means moving the furniture off it first. Plan for it rather than meeting it on the day.
The steps at this end of the range are wide, and each one changes what the rug can hold.

Compare 9 square meter rugs and 12 square meter rugs, or step back to 8 square meters if the room is under 32 m².
Fewer things than lower down the range, and that is the honest answer. A hand-knotted rug of 10 m² is many months at the loom — for a single weaver, considerably longer than that — which limits how many are made and puts them at the top of the price range. Loom-woven wool covers the same ground for less. Machine-woven pile in acrylic, polypropylene and viscose is made at this size to a fixed setting, and it is the practical choice for a room where the rug will take the traffic of a whole household.
Whichever construction, a rug this size is the largest single object in the room, and the pattern has to be read from across it rather than from above. Open fields and large-scale drawing hold up at this scale; a dense small repeat turns to texture and loses whatever the weaver drew. Oushak patterns were made for large rooms and read well at this size. Browse hand-knotted rugs, Oushak rugs, wool rugs and machine-woven rugs. For a floor no standard size fits, pieces are woven to measure — see custom rugs.
The trade standard is 250 × 400 cm, which is 8'2" × 13'1" and covers exactly 10.00 m². Hand-knotted pieces in the same band are wider and shorter, running from about 260 × 370 cm to 278 × 372 cm.
About 32 m² and up. Leave 40 to 45 cm of bare floor on every side rather than the 30 cm minimum used lower down the range, which puts the smallest sensible room at roughly 3.4 × 4.9 m for a 250 × 400 cm piece.
Measure before ordering. Rolled around its short side the rug forms a rigid cylinder about 250 cm long that will not bend around a half-landing. Check the door width, the diagonal of every stair turn, the depth of the lift and the ceiling height.
Ten to twelve. A table of 100 × 260 cm on a 250 × 400 cm rug leaves 75 cm of pile at each side and 70 cm at each end, which clears the 50 to 60 cm a chair needs to be pulled back with its rear legs still on the rug.
Take 10 square meters for one seating group with room to walk around it, and 12 square meters where the floor has to carry two groups or an L-shaped sofa with a second seat. Twelve square meters is 300 × 400 cm.
Without the beater bar and in the direction of the pile, with the furniture moved off two or three times a year so the whole surface is reached. Turning the rug end for end twice a year keeps sun and traffic from wearing one part of it.
Yes, in smaller numbers. A hand-knotted piece of 10 m² represents many months at the loom, and longer still for a single weaver, which is why fewer are woven and why they sit at the top of the price range. Loom-woven and machine-woven pieces cover the same floor for less.
