On the surface: Natural, Wool. The shine of the rug, its weight and what its care asks all follow from that choice.
Authentic pattern; the motif is built from the yarn itself, not from dye. It does not rub away as the surface wears. The ground reads colorful.
This rug is made in Türkiye. Writing the place of production onto the spec sheet also makes clear where the price comes from.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Turning the rug a hundred and eighty degrees once a year spreads the load of sunlight and foot traffic evenly across the surface.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Wool, no pile, and a whole composition in 95 × 184 cm
Ninety-five centimeters by a hundred and eighty-four: a small handwoven wool kilim from Türkiye, flat-woven with no pile, multicolored, carrying Anatolian motifs across its whole face. In feet that is 3'1" × 6'0", under two square meters, and the piece is sandık eskisi, stored in a dowry chest rather than laid on a floor. Small kilims were never the leftovers.
A weaver made this width because the loom was this width, and because a house needed pieces that could be moved: laid beside a bed in winter and rolled up in summer, spread for a guest, hung across a doorway against a draft.
The scale changes how the motifs read — at under two square meters there is no room for a grand composition, so the drawing is dense and the whole thing works as one figure rather than as a field with a border around it. Wool from end to end, worked by hand in Türkiye, and old. The house keeps it in its rare-pieces list.
Two square meters of flatweave weighs almost nothing, which is the argument for hanging it: on a wall the angular geometry of a kilim reads as the drawing it always was, and none of it wears. On a floor it wants a pad, because a small light flatweave slides.
Have it cleaned by someone who handles old kilims; a domestic wash is not a smaller version of that job. Handwoven in Türkiye, wool throughout, flat and pileless. 95 × 184 cm (3'1" × 6'0"), under two square meters. Anatolian motifs at a dense small scale, reading as a single figure. Sandık eskisi — a dowry-chest piece rather than a floor piece. Light enough to hang, and hanging is often the better use. On a floor it needs a pad; a small flatweave slides. Cleaning by someone who works on old kilims. One of one. Two square meters is the size a weaver could finish between other work, which is why so much of the good drawing in Anatolia is on small pieces.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
