Şal means shawl, and that is where the series takes its drawing from: the dense, small-repeat patterning of an Anatolian woven shawl, put onto a rug. Handwoven in wool, 82 × 118 cm (2'8" × 3'10"), multicolored, made in Türkiye. Shawl patterning is drawn to be seen close and folded, so it has no single center and no correct viewing distance.

01Where the Border comes from

The figures repeat at a small scale across the whole field and the border does the same thing narrower. On a rug the effect is odd in a useful way: from standing height it reads as texture and color, and only crouching separates it into individual motifs.

02Knot by knot, by hand
