On the surface: Leather. The same pattern woven in another yarn becomes another rug; the difference shows at the first touch.
Modern pattern. Because the pattern comes from inside the weave, it can be followed from the back as well. Built on a beige, cream ground.
Cleaning method: Dry cleaning. A pad laid underneath holds the rug in place and stops it rubbing against the floor; besides preventing sliding it also extends its life.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Damask drawn in cream over a beige cowhide ground
Damask was drawn to repeat across a bolt of cloth, and moving it onto a 180 × 240 cm (5'11" × 7'10") floor makes the repeat large enough to read from standing height rather than close up. Here the figure has been cut from beige and cream cattle hide out of South America and joined into a rectangle.
One rug, one sorting, no repeat. The scrolling shape is built, never printed: every curve is a separate piece of skin, trimmed to the line and butted against its neighbor, with the cream doing the drawing and the beige holding the ground behind it. Because the two tones sit close together, the figure surfaces and recedes with the light — plain from the door on a gray afternoon, fully drawn once a lamp is on beside it.
Damask is a cloth pattern by origin, named after Damascus, and something of cloth survives in it even in skin. Cattle hide from South America, sorted, cut and stitched from the reverse. Pale hide is the difficult end of this material.
The sorting has to be finer, because a beige half a shade off is obvious where a brown would pass unnoticed, and it is also the end that shows marks, so a rug in this palette belongs where shoes come off rather than in a corridor.
The Turkish care line asks for dry cleaning and nothing else; skin should not be soaked. Beige and cream South American hide, cut to a damask scroll. The figure is assembled from separate pieces, not printed onto the surface. 180 × 240 cm (5'11" × 7'10"), four point three square meters. Two close tones, so the drawing comes and goes with the light. Pale hide marks more readily than dark; best away from outdoor shoes. Dry cleaning required. One assembly; that sorting cannot be repeated. The pattern has moved from silk to wool to wallpaper over its life, and it turns out to survive being cut out of hide as well.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
