Brown Striped Handwoven Wool and Bamboo Viscose Rug

Bands of dark and light brown laid horizontally, closer to sedimentary rock than to any pattern: a handwoven rug from India in wool, cotton, viscose and bamboo viscose, 120 × 180 cm (3'11" × 5'11"), carrying no motif of any kind. The stripes are the whole design. One piece. Brown behaves in two ways here depending on where the light falls.

01Color that shifts through the day

Under a lamp or in direct sun the bands go bronze and faintly metallic; in flat daylight they settle back into dry earth tones and the whole surface goes quiet. The transitions between light and dark are soft rather than ruled, which is what keeps a striped rug from looking like a graphic.

02How it feels underfoot

Horizontal banding also lengthens a room, and in a narrow one that is a useful thing for a floor to do. Wool gives the structure and the wear; cotton, viscose and bamboo viscose give the softness and the shine, and the four together produce a pile of ordinary thickness that is pleasant against a bare foot.

03From the hand of the weaver

All of it was worked by hand in India. The house does not put this rug in a kitchen — a soft mixed pile and cooking are a poor combination, and it is better said here than found out later. Everywhere else in a home it is straightforward.

04The Wool on the surface

Household cleaning does the daily work; the wash does not. Handwoven in India: a wool pile, with cotton and two cellulosic yarns beside it. 120 × 180 cm (3'11" × 5'11") fits an entrance, a bedside or a small sitting area. Horizontal bands in dark and light brown, softly graded rather than ruled. Bronze under direct light, matt earth in flat daylight. Wool carries the wear; the cellulosic yarns carry the softness and the sheen. Not for kitchens — the house is clear about that. Ordinary pile height, comfortable barefoot. Wipe and vacuum freely; wash it through a specialist. A rug with no pattern to date is a rug that will still be right when the room around it has changed twice.
