On the surface: Natural, Wool. Writing the yarn onto the spec sheet is saying in advance how the rug will age.
Authentic pattern. The motif is built row by row as the weaving advances; it is only seen whole once it comes off the loom. The ground color is colorful.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. The place of production is written on the spec sheet; it comes straight from the workshop that wove it, with no reseller chain.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. For everyday care use a head without a beater bar and follow the direction of the pile; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Barak motifs in wool: every diagonal on it is a staircase
Nothing stands up off a kilim: the colored threads that make the pattern are the cloth itself, driven down so tightly that the foundation underneath disappears from sight. This is a handwoven wool kilim in the Anatolian Barak drawing, 140 × 250 cm (4'7" × 8'2"), made in Türkiye and kept in a chest rather than laid on a floor.
Multicolored, and one of one. Barak is one of the Anatolian pattern groups, and like most of them it is drawn in steps rather than curves, since a flatweave can only turn a corner one thread at a time. Look at any diagonal on it closely and you will find a staircase.
That constraint is the reason old Anatolian geometry looks the way it does, and the reason the Barak figures read as strong from across a room and as intricate from a meter away. Color is set block against block at full strength, with none of the shading a knotted pile allows. Wool above and below, hand-woven.
Sandık eskisi is the Turkish description of a piece put into a dowry chest instead of into use, and it accounts for the condition: no years of sun on the color, no years of feet on the surface. In exchange there are fold lines, and a stiffness that a kilim only loses by being used.
It is thin and light, so on a bare floor it needs something with grip beneath it, and it goes to a professional washer rather than into any machine. What makes a kilim a kilim? It is flatwoven rather than knotted.
The pattern is made by the horizontal threads themselves, packed tightly enough to bury the vertical ones, so there is no pile and both faces of the piece show the same design. A knotted rug instead has separate tufts tied onto a foundation, giving a raised surface. Why can you see light through a kilim? At a vertical color boundary each thread turns back at its own edge rather than locking into its neighbor, which leaves a narrow opening in the cloth.
Those gaps are ordinary in this technique and show up as thin lines of light when the piece is held against a window. Handwoven in wool in Türkiye, 140 × 250 cm (4'7" × 8'2"). Flatwoven with no pile; the same drawing appears on both faces. The Barak figures: stepped Anatolian geometry in strong, ungraded color. Sandık eskisi — put away in a chest, which is why the color held. Fold lines are part of what a chest-kept piece arrives with. Thin, firm and light; put something with grip beneath it on a bare floor. Professional washing. A single piece. Hang it against a window and the thin gaps at every color boundary light up, which is the one thing a flatweave can do and a knotted rug never will.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
