Burgundy Anatolian Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, 80 Years Old

Eighty years is the figure the house puts on it, and eighty years is what a rug looks like when it has been walked on without being ruined: hand-knotted, Anatolian, burgundy, hand-spindle-spun wool over a cotton foundation, dyed with roots, 126 × 243 cm (4'2" × 8'0"), woven in Türkiye. 01The origin of the pattern

Antique starts at a century, semi-antique runs from fifty up to a hundred, vintage from twenty to eighty, and no institution anywhere issues any of those labels. What can be looked at instead of a certificate is the pile: wool that has taken decades of feet lies down, and a laid-down pile has a sheen that new wool has not developed yet.

02Knot by knot, by hand

On a rug this old the wear is never even, and the color reads differently along the paths people took. The Anatolian drawing is angular because it has to be — a motif counted out in knots cannot curve, so village weavers built a vocabulary of hooks, stars, rams' horns and stepped diamonds that a knotted grid can hold exactly.

03From ground to pile

The yarn came off a kirmen, the hand spindle, and the dyes came from roots, and together those two produce abrash: the horizontal shift of tone where one dye lot ran out and the next began. Wool pile, cotton foundation. It has had one life already and shows it, so anyone wanting an unmarked floor should buy something new.

One piece, among the rare listings. What does semi-antique mean on a rug? It is trade usage, not a legal grade. In this house antique means a hundred years or more, semi-antique means fifty to a hundred, and vintage means twenty to eighty. No body anywhere certifies any of them, so the words describe a seller's reading of the piece. Is abrash a defect? No.

05The mark of slow weaving

Abrash is the horizontal banding that appears when one lot of hand-dyed yarn runs out and the next begins at a slightly different strength. On a root-dyed village rug it is the evidence that the yarn was dyed in small batches rather than bought by the sack. Whatever it was woven for is finished. What it does now is make a new room look as though it had been there considerably longer than it has.
