On the surface: Natural, Wool. The same pattern woven in another yarn becomes another rug; the difference shows at the first touch.
Authentic pattern. Because the pattern comes from inside the weave, it can be followed from the back as well. Built on a burgundy, red ground.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. It comes straight from the workshop with no reseller layer; the place on the spec sheet and the place it was woven are the same.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. A pad laid underneath holds the rug in place and stops it rubbing against the floor; besides preventing sliding it also extends its life.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Karapınar cicim in burgundy, 54 × 81 cm and all wool
At 54 × 81 cm (1'9" × 2'8") this is smaller than a doormat and it is not a floor piece — it is the size that hangs on a wall or lies along the top of a chest. Woven flat by hand in wool at Karapınar, a district out on the Konya plain, burgundy, and worked in cicim: a second set of colored threads carried over the ground weave as it goes, leaving the motifs raised. Burgundy is the ground and it is dense, so the raised threads have to be pale to register — cream, a yellow, a light blue.
Because those threads stand up off the surface they catch a raking light and throw a shadow half a millimeter long, which is why a cicim photographs badly and looks better in the hand than on a screen.
Turn it over and the reverse shows the carrying threads running between motifs, which is the quickest way to tell a cicim from an embroidered kilim. All wool, and chest stock — sandık eskisi, folded away rather than used, which is why the burgundy has not gone brown.
The raised threads are the vulnerable part: they are what a vacuum head or a chair leg catches first, and on a piece this small there is no reason to risk it when a wall or a table will do. Professional cleaning, gently, and tell the cleaner it is cicim. Woven by hand, in wool, at Karapınar in central Anatolia. Cicim technique — supplementary threads carried over the ground, motifs raised. Burgundy ground with cream, yellow and pale blue drawing. The reverse shows the carrying threads, which identifies the technique. 54 × 81 cm (1'9" × 2'8") — wall, chest lid, table. Raised threads snag; keep it away from vacuum heads and chair legs. Chest-kept, so the burgundy is still burgundy. Professional cleaning. Small weavings like this were the ones a household kept rather than sold, and they are usually the best drawing in the chest.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
