Red Natural-Dye Hand-Knotted Wool Konya Karapınar Rug

Every thread in this rug was spun on a kirmen, a hand spindle, before it was colored with plant roots and knotted. A hand-knotted wool rug from Karapınar on the Konya plain, 162 × 252 cm (5'4" × 8'3"), red-dominant, carrying the older Anatolian motif vocabulary. Karapınar weaving holds a Turkish geographical indication, and this is a registered example of it. A geographical indication is a legal protection rather than a marketing phrase.

01Knot by knot, by hand

It fixes where a thing may be made and by what method, in the way the names Champagne and Parma are fixed, and for Karapınar it covers the district, the material and the technique together. Spindle-spun yarn is part of what that protects.

02What the yarn is

A hand spindle turns out thread of slightly uneven thickness, and the unevenness carries into the finished pile as a fine variation across the whole surface that no machine-spun yarn produces. Root dyeing is the other half of it.

03Color that shifts through the day

The color comes from plant roots rather than from synthetic dye, and it behaves differently across decades — dulling toward its own hue instead of drifting away from it, and producing abrash, the small tonal steps that appear at the join between two dye lots. The Turkish title calls the piece a sandık eskisi: stored rather than used.
