On the surface: Wool, Natural. Writing the yarn onto the spec sheet is saying in advance how the rug will age.
Authentic pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is orange.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. In a rug in direct sun the color opens unevenly over the years; drawing the curtain halfway or turning the rug now and then prevents that.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Star ranks brocaded over orange, root-dyed wool from Fethiye
Fethiye sits on the Mediterranean coast of Muğla province, and what comes off its village looms is cicim — a flatweave with the motifs laid in afterward, thread by thread, over the woven ground.
This one is orange, wool throughout, 127 × 176 cm (4'2" × 5'9"), carrying rows of stars, and there is a single example of it. Cicim is worth explaining, because the word does not translate. A kilim is built from weft alone: the pattern is the structure.
In cicim the ground is woven first and the figures are then wrapped in with an extra yarn that floats over the surface, so the motifs sit slightly proud and you can feel them with a hand. Here the stars run in loose ranks across an orange field, dark reds and blue-greens among them, and none of the ranks quite line up with the next. The color is kök boya — dye taken from roots and other plant matter rather than a chemical bath.
Plant dye behaves differently from the start: it never quite saturates, and it fades in a warm direction, so a naturally dyed orange goes toward apricot with age while a synthetic one goes gray.
The wool is Anatolian and the whole thing was made by hand in Türkiye. One warning, plainly: brocaded motifs sit on the surface, so a spike heel or a dog's claw can pull a float loose. It is not a rug for a busy corridor. Handwoven in Türkiye, in the cicim technique of the Fethiye villages. Wool ground and wool motifs, brocaded rather than knotted. Orange field with ranks of star figures in dark red and blue-green. Dyed with root and plant dyes, which age toward warmth rather than gray. 127 × 176 cm (4'2" × 5'9") — a bedside, an entryway, a wall. The wrapped motifs stand above the ground and can be snagged. Washing is a job for a specialist, not a domestic machine. One kilim; the arrangement of the stars will not recur. What is a cicim kilim? Cicim is a flatweave in which the ground is woven first and the motifs are added with a supplementary yarn wrapped over the surface.
The figures stand slightly proud of the weave and can be felt by hand, which is what separates cicim from a plain kilim, where the pattern and the structure are the same thing. How can I tell root-dyed wool from chemically dyed wool? By how it ages.
Root and plant dyes rarely reach full saturation and they lose color in a warm direction, so an old naturally dyed orange drifts toward apricot. Synthetic dye holds its strength longer and then goes flat and grayish, and it seldom shows the tone bands left by small dye lots. Hung on a plain wall it reads as a piece of drawing; on the floor it will slowly lose the last of its sharpness, which is the better ending of the two.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
