The story of this rug

Red leads and everything else answers it: a kilim from Van, handwoven in wool, 106 × 144 cm (3'6" × 4'9"), worked in angular eastern Anatolian drawing — stepped forms, hooks, a firm border. This one came from a chest, not from a floor.

01A line from the archive

A single piece. The drawing is direct: large blocks of color, figures with no curve anywhere in them, and a border that closes the field firmly instead of trailing away. Red leads and the other colors answer it in bands.

02Coming off the loom

A flatweave has no pile to soften an edge, so every shape in it has a hard boundary, and that is why kilim drawing looks graphic where knotted work looks painted. Sandık eskisi — from the chest. The piece was woven, folded away and left there, so it arrives strong in color and set in its creases; lay it flat for a few weeks before judging them.

03What Wool does

Wool warp and wool weft, beaten tight enough that the warp threads vanish, which is what makes both faces usable. Van is at the far eastern edge of the country, and the weaving there is household work rather than a workshop trade. Handwoven in wool at Van, in far eastern Türkiye. 106 × 144 cm (3'6" × 4'9"), flat with no pile. Red-led, in blocks of color with angular figures and a firm border. Sandık eskisi — stored in a chest rather than used underfoot. Creases from folding; lay it flat for a few weeks. Warp threads fully covered, so either face can be used. Kilim-specialist cleaning. Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

Can the rug be used over underfloor heating?

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

How does the price change between sizes?

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.

Can I see the rug in Ankara?

Custom sizes can be woven in many series. Send your measurements on WhatsApp and we will come back with a production time and a price.
