The surface uses Natural, Wool. How a rug will feel is set first by the yarn, not by the pattern.
Authentic pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is beige, colorful.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Warp threads left long at both ends, orange and plum above
Orange and plum lozenges, taking turns down the length of a beige ground, with long fringes left at both ends: a Barak-pattern kilim handwoven in wool in Türkiye, 157 × 283 cm (5'2" × 9'3"). Barak is a named Anatolian motif family rather than a place on this label, and the alternation of two saturated colors down a neutral field is its signature. A single old piece. Two colors alternating is a harder composition than it sounds.
Orange and plum sit almost opposite each other in warmth, and a weaver holding them in sequence has to keep the beige ground wide enough between them or the two start to vibrate against each other along their shared edges. Here the ground has been left generous, so the lozenges read as separate events rather than as a single striped mass, and the beige — which is a color that does nothing on its own — turns out to be the element doing all the work.
Under a warm bulb in the evening the orange comes forward and the plum goes almost brown; in flat daylight they trade places. Flat-woven in wool, with no pile and nothing knotted, and the fringes at each end are the warp threads themselves rather than something added afterward. That is the plain test for a handwoven flatweave: on a machine-made piece the fringe is sewn on, and it can be pulled away from the body. Long fringes tangle and mat, and they want combing out with fingers rather than a brush.
Take the piece to a specialist for cleaning, and expect the usual signs of an older weaving at the selvedges. What is a Barak kilim? Barak is a named Anatolian motif family, recognizable by rows of large lozenges in two alternating saturated colors set against a neutral ground. The name describes the drawing and the weaving tradition it comes from rather than a single town. Handwoven in wool in Türkiye, flat-woven with no pile. Barak-family drawing: orange and plum lozenges alternating on a beige ground. 157 × 283 cm (5'2" × 9'3"), about four and a half square meters. The fringes are the warp threads themselves, not sewn on afterward. The two colors change relationship between daylight and lamplight. Long fringes mat over time and want combing out by hand. Specialist cleaning; older selvedges will show their age. One piece, and nothing else like it in this weave.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
