01The origin of the pattern

The flowers sit on it in lighter tones and the frame closes them in on all four sides, which is what keeps a classical pattern from spilling and is why the piece reads as finished rather than as a section cut out of something larger.

Under a lamp the red moves toward brown; in daylight it comes back to red, and the pale floral work is what changes least between the two. Hand-knotted in India: the pile is wool and the foundation beneath it is cotton.
