Brown Striped Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

Stripes are the least forgiving pattern a hand-knotted rug can carry, since every row of knots either lines up with the last or does not. This brown wool rug from India carries them anyway, ruled lengthwise in bamboo viscose over a matt wool ground, on a cotton foundation.

01The Wool on the surface

Two pieces exist, at 163 × 240 cm (5'4" × 7'10") and 174 × 244 cm (5'9" × 8'0"). The interest is in the contrast between the two yarns rather than between two colors. Wool absorbs light and gives back a flat, warm brown; bamboo viscose returns it, so each stripe reads as a band of shine crossing a band of matt.

02Where it is laid

Walk the length of the room and the stripes brighten. Walk back and they go quiet. It is a single-color rug that does not behave like one, and it needs nothing else in the room to explain it. Every knot was tied by hand, close together, which is what keeps thin stripes straight over more than two meters of length.

03From ground to pile

The face is wool and bamboo viscose together, over a foundation of cotton. That the two pieces are not the same size is not an oversight — hand-knotted rugs are measured after they come off the loom, not cut to a specification, and eleven centimeters of difference is ordinary. It goes to a professional cleaner, never into a bath. Hand-knotted in India, knot by knot, on a cotton foundation. Combines a wool ground with bamboo viscose in the striping. Reads as shine against matt rather than as one color against another. Runs its stripes lengthwise, which draws a room longer. Comes as two individually measured pieces, 163 × 240 cm and 174 × 244 cm. Requires professional washing. Brown gets called safe until someone puts a striped one down and the floor turns out to have a direction.
