Authentic pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is colorful.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Forty years in the dark: a Sivrihisar kilim at full color
What is unusual about this one is not how it was made but where it has been. A handwoven wool kilim from Sivrihisar, 155 × 355 cm (5'1" × 11'8"), thirty to forty years old, and stored folded away from daylight for most of that time — which is why its colors still read at full strength instead of the softened tone an old flatweave usually arrives with. Dye and sunlight are the real argument in a village kilim.
Wool takes color deeply and holds it, but ultraviolet light breaks the dye down at the surface of the fiber regardless of how it was made, and the reds and yellows go first. A kilim that spent four decades on a lit floor comes back a half-tone paler across the whole face and paler still along the strip nearest a window.
The motifs are the Anatolian repertoire — hooked forms, stepped bands, the running border — and they carry the contrast the weaver actually intended, which is a rarer thing to see than the weaving itself. Sivrihisar kilims hold a registered geographical indication, a legal tie between the name and the district; this piece was woven in one of those villages, by hand, entirely in wool.
Thirty to forty years makes it vintage under the age conventions of this trade: antique at a hundred years or more, semi-antique between fifty and a hundred, vintage from twenty to eighty, with no body anywhere issuing those definitions.
The same storage that saved the color also means the fold lines have set, and they will want a few weeks flat and weighted before they relax. Have it washed by someone who cleans kilims for a living. Why does storage matter more than age on a kilim? Ultraviolet light breaks down dye at the fiber surface, so two kilims woven the same year can look decades apart depending on whether one lived on a sunlit floor.
A piece kept folded in the dark keeps the contrast its weaver built into it. What does a geographical indication protect? The registration ties a product name legally to its district of origin, so a kilim may be sold as a Sivrihisar kilim only if it was woven there.
It certifies where, not how old or how good. Handwoven in a Sivrihisar village, wool throughout, no pile. Thirty to forty years old — vintage by trade usage, which is twenty to eighty years. Kept out of direct light, so the dyes read at close to their original strength. 155 × 355 cm (5'1" × 11'8"): long, narrow, and made for a floor laid with more than one piece. Anatolian motifs at full contrast, worked without a paper drawing. Set fold lines from long storage; a few weeks flat under weight will settle them. Washing by a kilim specialist. Most old kilims tell you how much light they have seen; this one has the awkward distinction of not having seen any.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
