Classic pattern. The motif is built while the rug is woven; there is no layer printed on afterward. There is red in the ground.
This rug is woven in China. Where a rug is from is read in its knot and its yarn more than in its pattern; that is why the place on the spec sheet matters.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Once a week with a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile, is enough for everyday care.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Red quieted by a cream medallion, silk and viscose in the pile
One large medallion in cream and pale green, sitting on a red field with fine floral work running round it: a red medallion rug hand-knotted in China from silk and viscose yarns, 91 × 152 cm (3'0" × 5'0"), tied over hundreds of thousands of knots.
There is one of it. Everything in the drawing answers the medallion. The cream and green inside it lift clear of the red without upsetting the balance, the border repeats the same floral vocabulary at a smaller scale, and the spacing is even enough that the eye reads structure before it reads ornament.
Red grounds usually shout. This one does not, because the cream frame takes weight off the color and the pile is fine enough that the red stays flat rather than glowing. Silk and viscose are both filament fibers, so the pile is thin, soft and reflective, and the surface moves between bright and matt depending on which side of the room you are standing on.
All of the knotting was done by hand, and the count runs to several hundred thousand for a rug this small. It offers the look of a pure silk piece without the price of one. A fine pile does take marks, so it belongs in an entrance or a bedroom rather than under a dining table. Knotted entirely by hand in China, in silk and viscose yarns. A single large medallion in cream and pale green over a red field. The border repeats the medallion's floral vocabulary at a smaller scale. Hundreds of thousands of knots go into a rug of this size. 91 × 152 cm (3'0" × 5'0") — an entrance, a bedside, or the foot of a bed. The pile is thin and reflective and will show pressure marks from furniture. Suited to professional washing; sweep or vacuum between times. It has the manner of a much more expensive rug and the honesty to be made of what it is made of.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
