02Highlights

Four things that set this rug apart

01

Wool surface

On the surface: Wool. The same pattern woven in another yarn becomes another rug; the difference shows at the first touch.

02

Modern motif

Modern pattern. Because the pattern comes from inside the weave, it can be followed from the back as well. Built on a red ground.

03

Türkiye loom

This rug is woven in Türkiye. It comes straight from the workshop with no reseller layer; the place on the spec sheet and the place it was woven are the same.

04

Professional cleaning

Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. A pad laid underneath holds the rug in place and stops it rubbing against the floor; besides preventing sliding it also extends its life.

Red Patchwork Hand-Knotted Wool Rug — product specifications

The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.

The story of this rug

It began as several other rugs. Older handwoven pieces were collected, sheared down, dyed again in one red and sewn together into this: a patchwork wool rug of 113 × 171 cm (3'8" × 5'7"), made in Türkiye, red throughout with black striped panels cutting across it.

01Which tone on the ground

One piece, and it could not be repeated. Because the panels come from different rugs, they take the same dye at different rates, and the red arrives on the surface in a dozen slightly different strengths. That variation is the design. Black striped sections are set in at angles against the red and give the whole thing a graphic snap it would never have as a plain field.

02Knot by knot, by hand

Nothing lines up, nothing repeats, and the seams are visible — anybody buying a patchwork should want to see them. The technique is a recycling method before it is anything else: worn hand-knotted rugs that would otherwise be finished have their pile shorn to an even height, are overdyed in a single color, then cut to size and joined.

03What the yarn is

The wool is old wool, which has already done its shrinking and its fading. Seams are the weak point in any patchwork and these are stitched carefully, but the rug should still be lifted rather than dragged across a floor by one corner.

04The mark of slow weaving

Wash it professionally and keep it out of standing water. Made in Türkiye from older handwoven rugs, sheared, overdyed and joined. 113 × 171 cm (3'8" × 5'7") — a kitchen, a study, or an entrance. Red throughout in a dozen strengths, with black striped panels set at angles. Wool surface; the wool is reclaimed and has already settled. Seams show by design and are the weak point — lift it, do not drag it. No two patchworks are alike, and this one cannot be reproduced. Professional washing. What is a patchwork rug? A patchwork rug is assembled from pieces of older handwoven rugs.

05After the color

The worn pile is sheared to an even height, the pieces are overdyed in one color, and they are then cut and stitched together. The method puts rugs back into use that would otherwise be discarded. Why is the red uneven across the surface? Each panel comes from a different rug, with a different original color and a different wool. When they are overdyed together in one bath, every panel takes the dye at its own rate, so the red arrives at a dozen slightly different strengths. The rug is a record of half a dozen other rugs, and that is a more interesting object than any one of them was.

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340

Bedroom

Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.

Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340

Hallway · runner

Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.

Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490

08

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

09

Frequently asked

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

Can I return it if I do not like it?

Yes. You can return it within 14 days of delivery, no questions asked. On international orders return shipping is paid by the buyer.

Will the color match what I see on screen?
