Red Anatolian Handwoven Wool Eşme Village Kilim

Eşme is a district of Uşak — Oushak in English — and its household kilims are among the few Anatolian flatweaves still named by village rather than by region. This one is small: a handwoven wool kilim, 84 × 133 cm (2'9" × 4'4"), red-grounded, and what the trade calls sandık eskisi, meaning it was kept folded in a dowry chest instead of being walked on. Chest-kept pieces look unlike used ones, and the difference sits mostly in the color: reds that never spent a decade in daylight stay close to what came off the dye pot.

01The origin of the pattern

The drawing is the Anatolian repertoire — small hooked figures ranged in columns with narrow guard stripes holding them apart — worked in a palette that stays warm the whole way through. The scale of those figures is set by the loom, and 84 centimeters of width is a household loom rather than a workshop one. Wool wefts on wool warps, flat-woven, with no pile anywhere in it.

02Knot by knot, by hand

A kilim gets its pattern from the weft alone, packed down hard enough to bury the warp completely, which is what keeps a flatweave thin and reversible. Folded storage leaves its own record, so expect creases along the fold lines that will relax over weeks and may not go entirely.

03Color that shifts through the day

Have it washed by a kilim specialist and by nobody else. Why are chest-kept kilims stronger in color? Light is what fades a natural dye. A kilim folded into a dowry chest spends decades away from the sun and off the floor, so its reds and yellows stay near the strength they had when the weaving came off the loom. Wear is absent for the same reason. Is a kilim the same on both faces? Yes.

04Reading the motif

The weft threads are packed down hard enough to bury the warp completely, so the pattern comes out identical on both sides.
