Gray Handwoven Wool Mut Village Kilim Runner

Mut is a district of Mersin province, up where the plain gives out against the Taurus foothills. This kilim came off a loom there: handwoven, gray, wool worked on cotton warps — the usual build for a flatweave of this weight — and 75 × 213 cm (2'6" × 7'0"), which is a runner, the shape a corridor asks for. Gray does something to a kilim that the customary reds do not.

01Reading the motif

It makes the drawing the thing you look at rather than the color, so the small figures running the length of the piece — stepped diamonds, a comb motif, a line of hooks — come forward instead of competing.

02What Wool does

There is red in it, but in quantities small enough to work as punctuation. Wool on cotton means the two fibers do different jobs: the cotton warp is the skeleton and takes the tension, the wool weft is everything you can see. That is worth knowing because it is also why a kilim is thin.

03Which furniture, which room

Nothing in a house is walked over as often as a hall runner, so this one will want cleaning at shorter intervals than a bedroom piece — professionally, and never in a machine.
