The pattern has been woven in western Anatolia for centuries; this piece was tied in India, and there is one of it. Tan and orange is the oldest Oushak palette there is, and it survives because it does something no other combination manages — it puts warmth on a floor without going red.

02The tone of the ground

Beige lifts the passages that need lifting, and the near-black navy provides the outline that keeps the whole thing from blurring. Among modern furniture it is the only warm object in the room; in a classical setting it becomes the connecting tissue. The wool has the shine that comes from a good clip, and the Manchester cotton underneath, a higher grade than standard cotton and brighter, carries the structure. Density is high, which a design with this much small drawing requires.
