Cream Oushak-Pattern Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

A hand-knotted wool rug in cream, 181 × 271 cm (5'11" × 8'11"), carrying Oushak motifs that have been drawn in Anatolia since the sixteenth century, knotted in India on a cotton spine reinforced with Manchester yarn. The wool is finished bright, so the cream picks up light instead of sitting flat under it.

01Color, by the light

One piece. Cream is the ground that shows every decision a weaver makes, and this one holds up to the scrutiny. The Oushak forms are set across it at full scale, the way the Anatolian workshops drew them, with enough space between the motifs that the pattern never crowds. Under a window the surface goes near-white and the drawing recedes; away from the light the cream deepens toward stone and the motifs come forward again.

02What the yarn is

It agrees with classical furniture and with rooms that have almost nothing in them, which is not a claim most patterns can make. The cotton and wool that went into it were prepared through a long process before any knot was tied, and the Manchester-yarn spine underneath is what carries the tension and keeps the rug true across nearly five square meters.

03The mark of slow weaving

Knotting a piece at this scale by hand is patient work measured in months rather than weeks. Under a seating group it makes a single surface out of a scattered arrangement of furniture.
