01The geography of the weave

There is one of it. Oushak — Uşak, in western Türkiye — has been drawing this family of forms for centuries, and what has been done here is to lift the blocks out of their crowded historical setting and leave ground around them.

02What Wool does

The red is not one red: it moves through brick and rust because the wool takes dye differently from row to row. Silk is used only inside the figures, so the pattern lifts under a window and settles again under lamplight while the beige stays exactly where it is. The pile is Erzurum fleece, wool with enough of its own oil left in it to grow brighter as it is walked on rather than duller.

03Knot by knot, by hand

The knot is the Gördes knot — symmetrical, tied over two warp threads — which is slower to work and is why a motif edge here stays sharp instead of blurring. Has Halı is one of the larger Turkish makers and the tuğra on the reverse is how its work is told apart from imitations.

04Where it is laid

Silk in a pile rules out home cleaning entirely, so the washing goes to someone equipped for it. Hand-knotted in Türkiye by Has Halı, sealed with the maker's tuğra on the reverse. Erzurum fleece in the ground; silk confined to the motifs. Uşak block motifs, redrawn with open ground between them. The red shifts between brick and rust from row to row. Tied with the Gördes knot, over two warps at a time. 181 × 252 cm (5'11" × 8'3") — a living room or a large bedroom. Washed only by a specialist equipped for silk. Kept properly it will outlast the room it is bought for, and the silk will still be doing its work when the walls have been repainted twice.
