The surface uses Wool, Cotton. How a rug will feel is set first by the yarn, not by the pattern.
Modern pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is black.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. In a rug in direct sun the color opens unevenly over the years; drawing the curtain halfway or turning the rug now and then prevents that.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Sheared down and dyed black; the old pattern still shows
This began as somebody else's rug. Hand-knotted in Anatolia between thirty and eighty years ago, then sheared down, thinned and dyed again in black, it is now 196 × 294 cm (6'5" × 9'8") of wool pile on a cotton foundation, with the earlier pattern showing faintly through the new color. Overdyeing does not erase a pattern.
It flattens the contrast between its parts, so what was a bordered field of medallions and vines becomes one dark surface with drawing visible in it at close range and nearly nothing at a distance.
The black is uneven, and it is not meant to be otherwise: the old dyes underneath accept the new one differently, so some areas go charcoal while others keep a brown or a green sitting below the black.
Those shifts are the whole appeal of the technique. Old handwoven rugs are collected, cropped close, thinned, re-dyed and dried, and only the ones sound enough to survive the process are used.
Surface wool and cotton foundation are as they were when the rug was first knotted. Cutting the pile short leaves a low, hard-wearing surface with less for dust to settle into, which is why rugs treated this way end up in kitchens and offices as often as in living rooms.
What you give up is softness — this is a thin, firm rug and not one to sit on the floor of. What is an overdyed vintage rug? It is an older hand-knotted rug that has been sheared short and dyed a second time in one strong color. The original pattern stays in the weave and shows through the new dye, which is what produces the flat, dark, faintly ghosted surface these rugs are known for. Is the pattern still visible under the black? Yes, at close range.
The dye lands unevenly on wool that already carried color, so medallions, borders and vines register as tonal shifts within the black rather than as separate colors. From across a room the rug looks plain. Originally hand-knotted in Anatolia, thirty to eighty years ago. Sheared, thinned, re-dyed black and dried; only structurally sound rugs are put through it. Wool pile on a cotton foundation, as first woven. Trade usage calls a rug of this age vintage — twenty to eighty years — and no authority issues the term. Low pile: firm underfoot, hard-wearing, quick to vacuum. 196 × 294 cm (6'5" × 9'8"), enough for a seating group or a dining table. Professional washing. It suits the rooms nobody treats gently — a kitchen, a hallway, anywhere people arrive still wearing shoes — and it was already old before it got here.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
