Orange Classic Vintage Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

A framing border runs the whole way around, and inside it the old Anatolian drawing has been left as it was: this is a hand-knotted wool rug of 140 × 245 cm (4'7" × 8'0"), re-dyed a warm orange after being sheared down.

01Reading the motif

One piece, and the process is not repeatable. The border is what keeps a bright field in order. Without it, orange at this size would spread; with it, the color stops at a line and the rug reads as an object rather than as a spill.

02Which tone on the ground

The tone is warmer than it looks in a photograph — closer to terracotta than to anything neon — and it does its best work in rooms with cool light, where it carries all the warmth there is. Homes, offices, art spaces and lounges all take it. Above the foundation, wool. The shearing has thinned the rug considerably, which is why a piece of this footprint can be moved by one person, and the pile that remains is short enough that dirt sits on top of it.

03Color, by the light

Nothing about this rug is new except its color, and its irregularities are part of what that means. Professional washing when it needs it. An older Anatolian hand-knotted rug: collected, sheared, re-colored, dried. Cotton in the foundation, wool in everything above it. A framing border kept from the original drawing, holding the field in.
