The story of this rug

At 208 × 294 cm (6'10" × 9'8") the rug is a Yağcıbedir in the old large format the trade calls a kelle — a hand-knotted rug in navy and burgundy wool, pile and foundation both wool, from Sındırgı in the Balıkesir highlands. A mihrab arch stands at the center. This is the only one. Around that arch the weaving repeats the fixed Yağcıbedir vocabulary: a tree of life, stars, and the small forms that stand for fertility and for protection, laid out in an order nobody has rearranged for generations.

01Color that shifts through the day

Navy holds the ground and burgundy carries the motifs, with white put in sparingly and always where a shape needs an edge. Under lamplight the navy closes up, and the white detail is what keeps the drawing readable across a room. Wool over wool is the construction the Yörük herding families brought north from the Taurus with them, and it makes a heavier, more pliable fabric than the cotton-founded rugs woven elsewhere in Anatolia.

02Coming off the loom

This piece was picked out of a group for its knot count, which is high even for the type. A registered geographical indication now protects the Yağcıbedir name for Sındırgı, and fewer looms work the pattern each year.

03Which tone on the ground

One thing to know: a rug this size and this weight is not something one person moves alone. Hand-knotted in Sındırgı, Balıkesir, in the Yağcıbedir tradition. Wool pile on a wool foundation — the older construction, heavier in the hand. 208 × 294 cm (6'10" × 9'8"), close to the traditional kelle format. A mihrab arch at the center, with tree-of-life, star, fertility and protection motifs around it. Navy ground, burgundy motifs, white used only where an edge is needed. Professional washing. It is a floor for a large room that already has dark wood in it, and in fifty years it will be the oldest thing standing there.

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.

Custom sizes can be woven in many series. Send your measurements on WhatsApp and we will come back with a production time and a price.
