Cream Oushak-Pattern Hand-Knotted Wool and Silk Rug, Harem Series

01After the color

There is one. Cream at this scale behaves like light rather than color. In a large salon with dark furniture standing on it the ground opens the floor back up, and in a paneled room it is very often the only pale surface below eye level.

02What it sits well with

That is the intended use, and it is a specific one: the piece was built for large formal rooms, for spaces furnished in dark wood, and for offices where the floor is expected to carry the room.

03The Silk on the surface

The Uşak motifs are drawn open across the field, at a scale that reads properly from four meters away. The fleece is the first clip from an Erzurum sheep, brighter and softer than any shearing that follows, and silk is worked in beside it.

04Knot by knot, by hand

The Gördes knot ties the pile symmetrically over two warps, and the density the workshop holds to is where the softness and the durability both come from. Two honest cautions: a cream floor of this area will show a route across it long before a dark one does, and something over ten square meters of dense pile takes several people to lift.
