Modern pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is beige, brown, cream.
This rug is woven in India. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Two dye lots showing in a plain cream field, from India
Baft is the Persian word for woven, and Lori Baft is the name a whole family of thick, plainly drawn handwoven rugs goes by. This one is cream with brown in it, handwoven in wool on cotton in India, 120 × 180 cm (3'11" × 5'11"). There is one of it. Plain is the hardest thing to weave well, because there is no pattern to hide behind and every irregularity in the yarn shows.
What you get in exchange is abrash — the faint horizontal banding that appears where wool from two dye lots meets in one field, a shade apart and no more. On a patterned rug abrash is a flaw. On a plain cream field it is the whole visual event, and the brown here is what it has to play against. It was woven in India, wool over cotton, and the wool is thick enough that the pile stands rather than lying flat.
At 120 × 180 cm this is a rug for one specific job: in front of a sofa, beside a bed, or under a small dining table for two. It is not big enough to organize a living room and it should not be asked to.
Cream wool at floor level is honest work — it will need vacuuming more often than a dark rug and it will look worse than a dark rug between cleans. A professional wash restores it; nothing at home does.
One piece, at this size, in this arrangement of tone. Handwoven in India, wool pile on a cotton foundation. Plain drawing in cream, with brown running through the field. 120 × 180 cm (3'11" × 5'11"), one piece only. Abrash — the soft banding left by separate dye lots — is visible and is not a defect. A thick pile that stands up rather than lying down. Sized for a sofa front, a bedside, or a small table. Baft means woven in Persian; the series keeps its name untranslated. Restore it with a professional wash rather than a home method. Plain rugs get bought to disappear, and the good ones turn out to be the thing people put a hand down to touch.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
