Red Oushak-Pattern Handwoven Wool Runner, Mahal Series

The yarn was dyed by hand, which is the first thing to know: no two dye pots ever match, so the red shifts from lighter to deeper down the length. A handwoven wool runner from the Mahal series, 76 × 310 cm (2'6" × 10'2"), knotted in Pakistan on a cotton foundation, cream Oushak flowers ranked along a red field. The flowers run in rows the length of the piece, curling into one another as they go, so the drawing pulls the eye along the corridor rather than stopping it.

01Reading the motif

A wide cream border takes the heat out of the red and gives the pattern an edge to end at. The Oushak motifs are the traditional ones. What the hand-dyeing adds is a horizontal banding that weavers call abrash — a visible change of tone where one batch of yarn ran out and the next began, and the surest sign that the color was not applied by machine. Wool on the surface and cotton in the foundation, where a little synthetic yarn is present to keep the piece from stretching; the house says so rather than calling the rug pure anything.

02From the hand of the weaver

The double knot keeps its shape under traffic, which is what a corridor rug is asked to do. Seventy-six centimeters is narrow — it will not tuck under furniture and it needs a pad or it will creep on a hard floor. Wash it professionally. Handwoven in Pakistan, on the double knot. Wool surface, cotton foundation, a trace of synthetic yarn for strength. Yarn dyed by hand — the red bands lighter and darker down its length. Cream Oushak flowers in rows, held by a wide cream border. 76 × 310 cm (2'6" × 10'2"), for a hallway or a long kitchen galley. Narrow enough that it needs an anti-slip pad on a hard floor. Washing by a professional; keep detergent off the hand-dyed red. A single runner. Why does the red change tone along the runner? The yarn was dyed in batches by hand, and no two pots come out identical.

03Color, by the light

Where one batch ran out and another began, the tone steps lighter or darker across the width. Weavers call this abrash, and it is evidence of hand dyeing. Is 76 cm a workable width for a hallway? It suits a corridor of roughly 100 to 140 cm across, which leaves a margin of floor on either side.

04Choosing the size

In a wider hall it reads as a stripe rather than a runner, and two pieces laid end to end look better. Corridor rugs take more footfall per square meter than anything else in a house, and this one was built knowing it.
