Blue Oushak Hand-Knotted Wool Runner, Mahal Series

Blue is unusual in this family of rugs, and that is the reason to start there: a wool runner from the Mahal series, hand-knotted, 78 × 256 cm (2'7" × 8'5"), with fine gold and cream scrollwork over a pale blue field and a cream border carrying warm brown.

01The Wool on the surface

Knotted in Pakistan; wool on top, cotton underneath. One piece. Oushak drawing usually sits on cream, madder red or brown. Setting it on a pale blue changes what the pattern is for — the curling flower-and-leaf figures stop reading as antique and start reading as drawing, the way a blueprint does.

02The tone of the ground

Gold against light blue is a high-contrast pairing at close range and a soft one from the end of a hall. The cream border cools the whole thing down again and keeps the blue from taking over a narrow space. On a wooden floor the blue picks up the warmth of the boards and comes out slightly green; on stone it stays flatly blue. Hands in Pakistan tied every knot, using the double knot that came out of Anatolia and never left the workshops that adopted it — two warps to a knot, slower to work, firmer in the finished rug.

03From ground to pile

Wool is what your foot lands on, and nothing else. The structure below is cotton, and a measured amount of synthetic yarn goes in with it so the piece keeps its rectangle. Because the yarns were dyed by hand, the blue is not level: it moves a shade lighter and darker along the length, which is what tells you a person and not a machine chose when to stop a dye lot. Hand-knotted in Pakistan on the Anatolian double knot. Wool on the face; the cotton structure beneath carries a measured synthetic addition.
