Soumak, not kilim: silk set into the wool at the highlights

The surface uses Wool, Natural. How a rug will feel is set first by the yarn, not by the pattern.
Authentic pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is colorful.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. In a rug in direct sun the color opens unevenly over the years; drawing the curtain halfway or turning the rug now and then prevents that.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Soumak, not kilim: silk set into the wool at the highlights
Soumak is not the same thing as a kilim, though it is sold as one: the weft is wrapped around the warp threads instead of passed straight through them, which produces a raised, ribbed, almost braided surface.
This is a handwoven Shahsevan soumak in wool with silk, 114 × 198 cm (3'9" × 6'6"), multicolored, made in the Middle East. Shahsevan drawing is close-packed and small in scale — hooked medallions, stars and stepped forms in tight rows — and soumak is the technique that can carry it, because a wrapped weft draws a fine line where a flat one draws a stepped block.
The silk is not the whole surface: it goes in where a highlight is wanted, and it announces itself by catching light in a straight line down the ribs while the wool around it stays matt. Handwoven in wool with silk.
Soumak takes considerably longer than plain flatweaving, because each pass has to be wound rather than thrown, and the back is left thick with the loose ends of every color change, which is how a soumak is identified at a glance. The technique produces a piece with no pile and real weight in the hand.
Silk in the yarn means a specialist wash; ordinary rug cleaning will dull it. How do you tell a soumak from a kilim? Turn it over. A kilim looks much the same on both faces, because the weft passes straight through the warp.
A soumak has a front of tight raised ribs and a back thick with the tails left at every color change, and it is noticeably heavier in the hand. Handwoven in the Middle East in wool, with silk worked into the highlights. Soumak construction: the weft is wrapped around the warp, not passed through it. Front of tight raised ribs; back thick with the tails of every color change. Shahsevan drawing — hooked medallions, stars and stepped forms in close rows. Silk catches light along the ribs while the wool beside it stays matt. 114 × 198 cm (3'9" × 6'6") — a study, a bedside, or a wall. Slower to weave than a flat kilim, and heavier for its size. Silk content means a specialist wash; ordinary rug cleaning dulls it. Soumak is the technique weavers used when the drawing mattered more than the hours, and that decision is still readable in the piece.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
