Black Patchwork Cowhide Rug, Classical Layout

Buttoned seating, molded wall trim, dark timber — that is the room Halıcızade had in mind when this one was put together. A black patchwork cowhide rug in a classical arrangement, 119 × 182 cm (3'11" × 6'0"), built from South American cattle hide. Only one exists. Classical here means the layout, since the material is anything but.

01Coming off the loom

The panels are ordered rather than scattered, the darks are grouped toward the center and the lighter skins are held to the outside, so the eye finds an implied field and an implied border where a woven rug would have real ones.

02A question of size

At 119 × 182 cm it is large enough to anchor a pair of chairs and a small table, which is more floor than most hide pieces cover. Hide has grain instead of pile, and grain reads differently from every angle, so the black moves between flat and slightly lustrous as you cross the room. Day to day it can simply be wiped down.

03To make it last

Anything past that belongs to a dry cleaner, and it should never be soaked. One caution the house would rather say out loud: a hide holds a crease if it is folded, so this wants to be rolled and never stored flat under weight. South American cowhide, cut into panels and joined into a rectangle. A classical layout: darker skins toward the middle, lighter ones at the edge. 119 × 182 cm (3'11" × 6'0") — two chairs and a table sit on it. Wipeable for everyday marks; dry cleaning for anything more. Roll it for storage, never fold it, because hide keeps a crease. Paneled walls, buttoned upholstery and dark wood are the setting it was chosen for. A single assembly; no second set of skins will match it. It will end up the quietest thing in a heavily furnished room, which is an odd job for a black rug and the reason it works there.
