01After the color

The Oushak drawing is old and generous — big open forms and an angular vine — and in its historical reds it reads as a period piece, while in gray it reads as a drawing. The tones run from near-white through to charcoal with nothing loud in between, so the rug takes its color cue from the room instead of setting one.

02From the hand of the weaver

The finished piece is washed and dyed once it leaves the loom, and that is what gives it both the shine and the worn appearance. Weavers in Pakistan and Afghanistan made it, wool knotted onto a cotton warp, thin and hard-wearing. Halıcızade names the recycled synthetic in the foundation rather than leaving it unsaid, which is a small thing to write and an unusual one to print. Gray rugs are generally bought to disappear; this one will not entirely, because the drawing is too good to ignore.

03The Wool on the surface

Keep it vacuumed and send it out for washing. Handwoven in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The surface is wool throughout; the cotton warp carries a trace of recycled synthetic. Classical Uşak forms redrawn from near-white through charcoal. Washed and dyed as a finishing step, which produces the luster. Thin, dense and durable enough for an office or a busy room. Takes its color from what surrounds it rather than imposing one. Vacuum regularly; professional washing beyond that. Is there synthetic fiber in this rug? A small amount, and only in the foundation.

04What the yarn is

The warp and the structure carry a trace of recycled synthetic yarn to strengthen them. Every fiber on the surface — everything a foot or a hand touches — is wool. What makes a rug part of the Retro series? The Retro series takes classical Anatolian drawing, mostly from Uşak, and reweaves it in contemporary colors instead of historical ones.

05Color that shifts through the day

A finishing wash and dye is then applied to the woven rug, which gives the surface its luster and its worn appearance. An old pattern in a new color is either a compromise or a translation, and gray is the tone that makes it the second one.
