The story of this rug

Nothing is drawn on this prayer rug except one small mark, set where the forehead comes down. It is loom-woven in Anatolia in wool and cotton, in plain brown, 80 × 130 cm (2'7" × 4'3"), and the emptiness of the surface is the design rather than an absence of one. Brown is the choice a plain prayer rug wants, because it holds a room's warmth without asking for attention, and because the eye finds nothing on it to follow. That is the whole intention of the Baş Başa series: fewer things to look at, so that what is left is the rhythm of the prayer itself.

01The mark of slow weaving

The single mark is not decoration and not a mihrab arch — it is a point of orientation, quiet enough that it never interrupts. Wool and cotton, worked on Anatolian looms where machine structure and hand finishing meet, and the fringes are knotted afterward by women in the region, one at a time.

02How it feels underfoot

Wool at this weight keeps its shape for years of daily kneeling, which is the practical argument for a wool prayer rug over a thin printed one. It sheds very little. What does Baş Başa mean? Baş Başa is Turkish for being alone together — head to head. The series is named for the state it was made to support: a person, their own spirit, and their Creator, with nothing else in the room.

03First contact

The design follows from the name, which is why the surface carries almost nothing. Why is there only one mark on the rug? The mark sits at the point where the forehead touches the rug during prostration. It gives the eye one place to settle and the body one place to return to.

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
