Traditional pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is red.
This rug is woven in Afghanistan. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. In a rug in direct sun the color opens unevenly over the years; drawing the curtain halfway or turning the rug now and then prevents that.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Two feet by three, a full Oushak medallion, hand-knotted in wool
It is a small rug — 61 × 91 cm, roughly two feet by three — and the size is the point: a hand-knotted wool Oushak in red, with a full central medallion, stylized flowers and curling branch work drawn on it at a scale most rugs would need three meters to carry.
A second size is made at 62 × 90 cm. Wool pile on a cotton foundation. Turquoise, navy, mustard and cream are set against the red, and because the ground is deep and warm those four colors read as bright rather than loud.
Border bands run inside one another around the field, tightening the composition, and small geometric and plant ornaments fill the spaces between. Wool takes dye unevenly, so the reds shift in depth as the light moves and the surface never goes flat.
Put it in an entrance, in a narrow corridor, at the side of a bed, or on a table — at this size those are all reasonable places for it. It is knotted by hand on the loom, knot after knot, and no two come out identical — the medallion sits a row or so differently on each.
The pile is wool alone. The foundation is mostly cotton, and a small amount of recycled synthetic yarn is spun in to hold the structure together. Halıcızade declares that rather than hiding it.
Small hand-knotted rugs are among the few genuinely hand-made objects still bought as gifts, and this is one of the reasons the size exists. Hand-knotted, one knot at a time, so every piece differs slightly. Wool pile; the foundation is mostly cotton, carrying a little recycled synthetic yarn for strength. A classical Oushak drawing: central medallion, stylized flowers, curling branches. Turquoise, navy, mustard and cream against a deep red ground. Nested border bands framing the field. Two sizes: 61 × 91 cm and 62 × 90 cm. Professional washing. Small rugs move around a house for decades and end up in rooms nobody planned for them, which is more than can be said for a three-meter one. This rug belongs to the Şahzade Series.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
