02Highlights

Four things that set this rug apart

01

Wool yarn

On the surface: Wool. Writing the yarn onto the spec sheet is saying in advance how the rug will age.

02

Classic motif

Classic pattern. Because the pattern comes from inside the weave, it can be followed from the back as well. Built on a red ground.

03

Afghanistan loom

This rug is woven in Afghanistan. It comes straight from the workshop with no reseller layer; the place on the spec sheet and the place it was woven are the same.

04

Professional cleaning

Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. A pad laid underneath holds the rug in place and stops it rubbing against the floor; besides preventing sliding it also extends its life.

Technical details

Red Oushak Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, Şahzade Series — product specifications

The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.

The story of this rug

Red Oushak Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, Şahzade Series — a deep red field carrying classical Oushak drawing in turquoise, navy, mustard, cream and green, hand-knotted in wool over a cotton foundation.

01Reading the motif

Two pieces exist, one at 123 × 184 cm (4'0" × 6'0") and one at 131 × 180 cm (4'4" × 5'11"). Oushak is the English spelling of Uşak, a weaving town in western Türkiye whose patterns have been copied for four hundred years, and the drawing here is the town's own: stylized flowers and long curling branches that keep the eye moving instead of letting it settle. Red is doing the heavy work.

02Which tone on the ground

Against cream, beige, walnut and bare wood the rug holds its temperature; add brass light fittings, linen and something in petrol blue, and it stops looking like a red rug and starts looking like the reason the room was arranged that way. The pile is all wool, tied by hand loop by loop, so no two areas of the field are quite identical — those small drifts in the drawing are how a knotted rug is told from a printed one.

03The Wool on the surface

Under the pile the foundation is largely cotton, with a small proportion of recycled synthetic yarn added to it for tensile strength; we say so rather than calling the whole rug natural. Wool takes dye deeply, which is why the red reads as several different reds according to which side of it the light falls on.

04The tone of the ground

Washing goes out to a specialist. Wool pile, hand-knotted, over a cotton foundation with a little recycled synthetic yarn in it. Classical Oushak drawing: stylized flowers and long curving branches. Turquoise, navy, mustard, cream and green on a deep red ground. Two separate pieces, at 123 × 184 cm and at 131 × 180 cm. Small irregularities across the field, which is what hand knotting looks like. Suits classic, eclectic and traditional rooms; brass and petrol blue set it off. Specialist washing. Why is there synthetic yarn in the foundation? The foundation is largely cotton.

05From ground to pile

A small proportion of recycled synthetic yarn goes into it for tensile strength, and it sits under the pile where it is never visible or underfoot. We state it because the surface is entirely wool and the foundation is not, and those are two different facts. What makes a pattern an Oushak pattern? Oushak, or Uşak in Turkish, is a weaving town in western Anatolia with a pattern tradition documented back to the fifteenth century.

06Up close to the pattern

Its drawings favor large stylized flowers, long curving branches and open fields, which is what is on this rug. Red rugs are usually bought to be the loudest thing in a room; this one is quiet enough to be bought for the drawing instead.

07

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340

Bedroom

Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.

Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340

Hallway · runner

Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.

Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490

08

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

09

Frequently asked

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

For international orders, shipping, duties and taxes are calculated at checkout and paid in advance; there is no cash on delivery. Rugs in stock leave Ankara within 1–3 business days.

Can I return it if I do not like it?

Yes. You can return it within 14 days of delivery, no questions asked. On international orders return shipping is paid by the buyer.

Will the color match what I see on screen?

Small differences in tone are possible depending on your screen. Open the images full screen to study the surface, and watch the review video where there is one. If you want to be sure, you can see the rug in person at our showroom in Çankaya, Ankara.

Can the rug be used over underfloor heating?

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

How does the price change between sizes?

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.

Can I see the rug in Ankara?

Yes. At our showroom in Çankaya, Ankara you can see the rugs in this series and touch the weave. No appointment is needed.

Can I ask for a size that is not listed?

Custom sizes can be woven in many series. Send your measurements on WhatsApp and we will come back with a production time and a price.
