On the surface: Wool, Cotton. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
Traditional pattern. The motif is built while the rug is woven; there is no layer printed on afterward. There is red in the ground.
This rug is woven in Afghanistan. Where a rug is from is read in its knot and its yarn more than in its pattern; that is why the place on the spec sheet matters.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Once a week with a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile, is enough for everyday care.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Blossoms running the length, no medallion, in red wool
The house states the foundation plainly, so we will too: wool pile, a mostly cotton foundation, and a trace of recycled synthetic yarn spun in for strength. This is a handwoven Oushak-pattern rug from the Şahzade series in deep red, 87 × 120 cm (2'10" × 3'11") and 87 × 121 cm (2'10" × 4'0") — small, and worked at full classical density. Red is the ground and everything else is placed against it: turquoise, navy, mustard, cream and green, in stylized blossoms and scrolling vines that run the length of the piece rather than circling a medallion.
At this scale an Oushak drawing has to be edited rather than shrunk, and it has been — fewer motifs, larger, so the pattern still reads from standing height. Walnut, light oak and unfinished wood all take it.
In an entry it makes the first two steps into a house warm ones; beside a bed or in front of a dresser it is the only strong color in a quiet room. Each piece is knotted by hand, row by row, which is why no two are identical and why the two listed sizes differ by a centimeter.
The wool is full-bodied enough that the colors stay dense rather than thinning at the tips, and the tone moves with the angle of the light. Cotton in the foundation is what holds the rectangle square over time; the small amount of recycled synthetic is there for wear, and the house would rather name it than call the rug all-natural. Shake it out, vacuum it, and every few years send it to be washed. Handwoven, knotted row by row — every piece varies slightly. A wool pile over a foundation that is largely cotton, with a little recycled synthetic yarn for strength. Oushak blossoms and scrolling vines in turquoise, navy, mustard, cream and green on red. 87 × 120 cm (2'10" × 3'11") and 87 × 121 cm (2'10" × 4'0"). The colors deepen or lighten depending on where the light comes from. A small rug at full pattern density, edited rather than reduced. Professional washing. It is the size people buy last and use most, which is usually a sign the room needed it.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
