Cream Oushak-Pattern Loom-Woven Tencel Rug, Zade Series

Nearer to an old shawl laid flat than to a classical rug: a cream loom-woven Tencel® piece from the Zade series; across 200 × 290 cm (6'7" × 9'6") thin vines and stylized flowers in gold-yellow and silver-gray run over an open ground in the Oushak manner, all of it on a cotton foundation. Oushak — Uşak in Turkish, a weaving town in western Anatolia — draws its flowers large and its outlines soft, and the pattern here keeps both while losing the heavy red and blue that usually carry it.

01The origin of the pattern

On a cream ground the vines behave the way pattern behaves in damask: definite from a distance, silhouetted as you move away, sharper as you come closer. Cream also does something practical, which is to hold daylight and give it back, so a room with one window looks larger with this on the floor than without it.

02From ground to pile

Among rustic or half-classical furniture — oak, iron, linen — it is the piece that reconciles them. Tencel® over cotton. Tencel® brings the silk-like light and the cotton brings the flat matt underneath it, and the two together are why the field changes tone as you cross it rather than staying one cream.

03Coming off the loom

Kütahya looms carry it, with machine knots and hand finishing taking turns, and the fringes are braided afterwards by hand.
