It looks the way a garden looks when its shadow falls on a pale wall: Cream Oushak Loom-Woven Wool Rug, Zade Series — fine branches and leaves winding across a cream ground, reddish flowers and light gray touches emerging between them.

01What Wool does

Wool with cotton and Tencel®, 200 × 290 cm (6'7" × 9'6"), off a loom in Kütahya. One piece. The border repeats the same plant vocabulary, tighter and denser, and closes the field the way an Oushak border has closed a field for four hundred years.

02Comes from from Uşak

Oushak is the English name of Uşak, the town in western Türkiye whose pattern books the rest of the world has been copying for five centuries, and what is here is a reading of that composition rather than a reproduction: the drawing is classical, the ground is far paler than a classical one would be.

03Where it is laid

Beside solid wood furniture it holds the eye without asking for it. "Everywhere has the same rugs — let us say something different" is roughly how the design team put it, and this came out of that.

04From ground to pile

Wool, cotton and Tencel® meet in the surface, wool keeping the firmness a rug is expected to have, Tencel® adding a thin shine that turns with the light. Kütahya sets the structure on the loom; the rug then goes out to the villages, where women finish the fringes by hand, knot by knot. A tree of life sits hidden in the frame.

05After the color

The pile is short and sheds little, so a vacuum handles ordinary weeks. Loom-woven in Kütahya, then fringed by hand in the villages around it. Wool with cotton and Tencel® in the surface. Cream ground, red flowers and light gray branch work, in a classical Oushak layout. A dense plant border repeating the drawing of the field. A tree of life concealed in the frame — the Halıcızade mark. Short pile that sheds little. 200 × 290 cm (6'7" × 9'6") — a sitting room, a lobby, a library floor. A specialist wash when it needs one. Cream on a floor where children live is a choice made with the eyes open, and this pattern is at least busy enough to forgive most of what follows.
