Red and Blue Sivas Zara Handwoven Wool Rug, Anadolu Şal Series

121 × 185 cm (4'0" × 6'1") is the size between a mat and a room rug — long enough to hold a bedside or an entry, small enough to move alone. This is the Anadolu Şal series in red and blue — a Sivas Zara wool rug woven by hand in Anatolia, with orange and yellow appearing between the bands.

01After the color

A single piece. Four colors is fewer than these rugs usually carry, and the restraint shows. Red and blue take most of the field; orange and yellow surface only where one band gives way to the next. What comes of that is a rug legible from across a room, which the busier pieces in the series are not.

02From the hand of the weaver

Wool that keeps its own luster does the rest — the colors deepen where light falls at an angle and flatten where it strikes square. It is the work of craftswomen weaving by hand over months, in Anatolia, on a loom that produces one rug and then another. Nothing about it is square: the bands wander by a millimeter or two and no edge is a straight line, because a handwoven rug is finished at tension rather than cut to a size. That is the register of the object, not a flaw in it.

03Color, by the light

Beside light timber or plain modern furniture it will carry the entire color budget of a room. A rug washer, when it needs one. Handwoven in Anatolia in natural wool, over months of work. Red and blue across most of the field, with orange and yellow at the band edges.
