Brown Oushak Handwoven Wool Rug, Ottoman Series

Brown and blue is an old Anatolian pairing and a difficult one to get right, because a brown too far toward red turns the blue purple.

01The origin of the pattern

This brown stays on the earth side of the range and the blue in the border is softened almost to slate, so the two meet without either winning. The Oushak figures in the field have been reworked rather than copied — the drawing is looser than a classical original and the ground left more open — and the effect is a formal rug that does not require a formal room. Erzurum fleece is the wool eastern Anatolian weavers reach for: it holds a shine, takes dye evenly and wears hard.

02The mark of slow weaving

The double knot, which few workshops still use, ties each point of the drawing twice, giving a denser body and edges that stay sharp under traffic. Both sizes are single pieces, and the ten-centimeter difference in length between them is what happens when a rug is finished at the loom. Washing is a specialist job, and it should be done rarely. 03Coming off the loom

Here the shape serves as a maker's mark: Has Halı works it into the back of the pieces it weaves, and it is how a rug from this workshop can be identified after it leaves the shop. What does the double-knot technique change? Each point of the drawing is tied twice rather than once. The rug comes out denser and heavier, the motif edges stay sharp instead of blurring as the pile wears, and the piece takes considerably longer to weave, which is why few workshops still use the method. A mark on the back of a rug is only worth something if the workshop is still there to stand behind it, and this one is.
